Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
