A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
